چکیده

Whole-plant barley was reconstituted and treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at the rate of 0, 2, 3 or 4% of dry matter. Rumen-fistulated sheep were used to investigate the effects of treatment on nutrient digestibility and concentration of rumen fluid and plasma metabolites. Treatments increased digestibility of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, cellulose and non-starch components at the ( P < . 0 1 ) level and for organic matter and gross energy at the (P < .05) level. Nitrogen retention decreased ( P < .05) with 4% NaOH compared to other treatments. Rumen fluid molar proportion of propionic acid increased ( P < .05) while isovaleric acid decreased ( P < .01) with increasing level of NaOH. Acetic acid tended to decrease and butyric acid tended to increase with treatment. Rumen fluid lactic acid increased (P < .05) and pH tended to decrease with alkali treatment. Increasing levels of NaOH increased rumen osmolality (P < .01) and decreased rumen ammonia (P < .05) and plasma urea (P < .01). Ruminal hypertonicity may have limited the extend of improvement in digestibility due to NaOH treatment as well as impaired nitrogen metabolism.

Digestibility, microbial protein synthesis, rumen and blood parameters in sheep fed diets containing hydroponic barley fodder

This experiment was conducted to determine the possibility of replacing part of the barley grain by hydroponic barley fodder (HBF), and evaluating its effect on digestibility, rumen parameters, microbial protein synthesis and blood parameters in sheep. Four male Kermani sheep, 18-month-old (34.7 ± 1 kg live weight) were randomly assigned to a change over 4 × 4 design and fed the experimental di...

This research was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding of barley grain (whole or cracked) combined with two different protein sources (urea or soybean meal) on nutrients digestibility and rumen parameters (pH and ammonia concentration). Four rumen fistultated Mehraban sheep was used that the mean body weight of sheep was 36.5±0.5 kg. The the experiment was conducted in change over de...

Comparative yield and feeding value of barley, oat and triticale silages

McCartney, D. H. and Vaage, A. S. 1994. Comparative yield and feeding value of barley, oat and triticale silage. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 74: 91-96. The yield and feeding value of barley (Hordeum vulgare 'Johnson'), oat (Avena sativa 'Calibre') and triticale (Triticosecale 'Carmen') silages were compared in a field study, a heifer growth trial (1 19 d in length, with four pens of eight Charolais cros...

Genetic variations in the digestibility in sheep of selected whole-crop cereals used as silages.

Whole-plant winter cereals could be of great interest if used as silages for ruminant feeding as opposed to summer crops in that they would spare water resources or valorize low-input management. This study aimed to compare the feeding value of rye, barley, wheat (two genotypes) and triticale (six genotypes). The cereals were sown in October and harvested as silage in June. Forages were offered...
